Background

Traditional data collection methods for sidewalk inspections prevent public works departments from easily maintaining their sidewalk and curb ramp inventory. It is a time-consuming process, requiring lots of manual labor that often misses essential data for ADA transition planning. DeepWalk’s solution is a mobile app that uses the LiDAR scanners in the iPhone to measure sidewalks for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Public Right-of-Way Access Guidelines (PROWAG).

DeepWalk does not do data collection for projects, but there are three options for who can collect the data: the client, a partnering engineering firm, or Quality Counts, a partnering data collection firm. To collect data with DeepWalk, a person must walk to the sidewalk system while scanning with the mobile app. Sidewalk and curb ramps can be inspected at 1.5 to 2 mph with 1 person doing data collection. In one day, accounting for breaks and travel time, one data collector can scan an estimated 8 miles of sidewalk. Below is a breakdown of each data collection option and who is recommended to use it depending on the type of project.

Option 1: Client collects the data themselves

DeepWalk developed our mobile app to be simple and intuitive for anyone to use, mobilizing public works departments across the country to go out and collect their sidewalk and curb ramp data themselves. To get started, DeepWalk provides a 25-minute asynchronous online training to give the data collector a comprehensive understanding of the best practices to follow while scanning with our mobile app. We also provide the data collection planning tools needed via our web application. These tools give your team the ability to customize the manual tags collected during data collection and plan the scanning route for your data collectors.

Our mobile app is downloadable from Apple’s App Store and works on the Pro models of the newest iPhones. See more details about compatible iPhones and our iPhone rental program here.

Option 2: Client partners with engineering firm for data collection

Alternatively, clients who have existing relationships with engineering firms can use data collectors from the firm to scan their sidewalk system. Our mobile app can be downloaded on any Pro model iPhone, 12th generation and later, and log-in information can be provided to multiple data collectors for each project.

Option 3: Quality Counts collects the data for you

DeepWalk has partnered with Quality Counts, a transportation data collection firm, to streamline the data collection process for your project. Quality Counts will send their team of experienced data collectors to your location to scan your sidewalk system using DeepWalk’s mobile app. Opting for data collection with Quality Counts saves time for your team by eliminating the need for training and data collection while minimizing the possibility of rescan requests.
