Understanding DeepWalk's Data Tool - Overview Page

March 12, 2025

This video covers everything you need to know about the Overview Page in DeepWalk’s web application. This page provides a high-level perspective of your sidewalk inspection project, featuring an interactive map, data layers, condition insights, and the ability to export data. Here are top 3 main functions of the Overview Page: exploring multiple sidewalk dataset layers, viewing detailed sidewalk accessibility and condition data, and downloading data for export to other GIS or engineering software.

Introduction

0:00 Hello and welcome. This is Yu-Ning Liu. I am a GIS engineer at DeepWalk. In this video, I would like to walk you through the Overview page in our DeepWalk's web app.
0:14 It is one of our Data Tools. And this page is basically designed to give you a big-picture perspective on your sidewalk inspection project.
0:26 We provide an interactive map interface with essential layer data, condition insights, and. exportable files. So by comparison, we have also the Detailed page also under our Data Tool in our web app.
0:40 We will have another great video to cover that as well. where can dive into the individual sidewalk scans.

Top 3 Overview Page Functions

0:48 Overview page provides three main functions.
0:52 The first one is interactive mapping, so you can explore multiple sidewalk-related layers. So you can see that scan feature, curb ramps, mid-block accessibility, and the panel feature, manual tag, and some population data.
1:09 We are still working on this. Also, we can click on any sidewalk segment to, or panel, to open a pop-up window.
1:21 So you can see it shows ah, pre-computed sidewalk condition and accessibility data. We can also export and download sidewalk mapping fields in GeoJSON format.
1:34 For further analysis, you can bring it to another software like QGIS, ArcGIS, or Cartograph. So, now, let's see how each function works in action.

1. Layers & Filtering - Sidewalk Lines

1:47 By default, the Overview page displays all the sidewalk scan features classified into two types. One is curb ramp, and the other is mid-block ramp.
1:56 These are color code based on their accessibility score, ranging from 0 to 5. You can easily identify areas that need attention.
2:07 For example, the darker the black and the red, Sidewalks could mean the lower score of sidewalk accessibility.
2:18 So here you can toggle the score ranging to show and refine the view. So for example, I would like to find, focus on something more severe, we can see only the accessibility score <= 3.
2:43 This allows you to focus on specific accessibility condition. For example, we can isolate sidewalks with the lowest accessibility ratings like that.
2:56 scoring, we offer several key measurement fields to help visualize different sidewalk conditions on the map. This includes average run slope in percentage, the cross slope score, the clear width in inches and the deteriorated area as a percentage of the sidewalk affected.
3:20 So these measurements are integral to our scoring algorithm. If you want to get more details, deeper understanding of how our scoring system works and how this metric contributes tooverall evaluations, please feel free to visit our website here for more detailed explanation and resources.

1'. Layers & Filtering - Panel and Manual Tag Points

3:40 All right. In addition to sidewalk line walk, we also provide some point based, uh, layers. This show problematic area panels, like the points with severe obstructions.
3:57 or serious cross-road violation. You can also see the legend indicates that the panels in different level of severity.
4:10 Another useful layer is manual text. This represents custom user-collected data points such as the trip hazard, the tree roots, the ponding area, the broken utility, for example.
4:24 This tag allows you to, add context that may not be automatically detected in areas, but instead, something that your data collector collects manually during the data collection process.
4:39 So you can see if you go to the Collect page, the Tags page, you can see the predefined points that you are focused on.

2. Popup Information & Condition Insights

4:51 Now let's take a look at how to access detail condition insights. So you can click on any sidewalk scan features line to open the pop-up window with key computed fields.
5:04 And there is also a top-down view, uh, image to look at. So if I focus on this scan, for example, I can see the accessibility grade being 4.0, so that's why it's a colored in yellow right now, and the description, it's a minor barrier to access found, and you can see additional fields and measurements related to the sidewalk conditions and accessibility issues.
5:39 The symbology here in the image helps quickly visualize where the accessibility issues So, when you go to the legend, the mid- block, and you can see this icon symbology corresponds to what's being used in the top-down view.
6:02 So, if I go to the panel features and click the cross slope panel, and maybe click on the icon on top of the scan feature, I can see the severity being moderate.
6:18 So, moderate is defined as three to four percent, percentage of the cross slope at a panel-based analysis, so maybe this one.
6:33 If you want to go in more details and take a closer look at individual scan feature and individual panel, you may want to use the ID here, and, when you go to the Details page, you will filter by scan ID to take a closer look.
6:54 Let's open the manual tag layer. Unlike automatically detected sidewalk issue, manual tag may capture first-person observation.
7:05 So if you click on the, uh, point here, you can notice, uh, a little bit different attribute store in the, in this, uh, uh, data.
7:16 So for example, FPV media, first-person view image. You can access, uh, this image using the provided URL so you can see the first-person view image taken from the data collection.
7:31 It will be really useful, especially if you are creating a program, and sending out the workers to have those areas fixed.
7:40 This image, first-person view image, will be really, really helpful.

3. Data Download

7:47 All right, lastly, one of the most powerful features of the Overview page is the about the ability to download your data sets.
7:55 So if you click on this download button, this data sets include the scan feature represented as LineString geometry, as well as panel feature, obstructions, and manual tags represented as points.
8:09 Point geometry with a latitude and longitude coordinates stored in addition to some other attributes. They are provided in GeoJSON format.
8:20 It's a dictionary format that is widely used for the web technology. But if you need a different GIS format like the Shapefile, GeoPackage, or KML, there are online tools available for easy conversion as well. If you are unfamiliar with the GeoJSON, don't hesitate to reach out to us. We are happy to help!

Closing

8:42 That's a wrap. Uh, our Overview page in DeepWalk's web app is a really powerful way to analyze, interact with, and explore your sidewalk condition data.
8:55 It helps you to make informed decisions on accessibility improvements. If you have any questions, feel free to contact team.
9:05 Thanks watching, and happy mapping!
